It’s a sign…autumn is moving along. My allium bulbs arrived over the weekend, sorted and ready for planting. I’m slowly making my way through the garden and dahlia beds, cutting, pulling, and getting things ready for winter.
But the moment that really tugs at my heartstrings is when the fields are mowed. It reminds me of blowing on the fluffy white head of a dandelion, making a wish, and watching the seeds drift away. You know that feeling of wishing you could hold on to a moment just a little longer? That’s how I feel when the fields are cut.
Each year, we leave a stray patch of meadow unmowed, somewhere for me to wander, study, and photograph. This year, it will be near a spot we call Turtle Rock, named for the enormous turtle-shaped boulder that sits in our field. It’ll do. :))
Today, I’ll blow a kiss to the meadow and bid it farewell for another season. And then I’ll start looking forward to spring, when the first tufts of green appear across the fields and the ferns begin to uncurl.
