The Gathering
Sketching in Silence with Joan Hanley
Tahilla Farm, Peterborough, New Hampshire
September 12, 2026
Intimate, seasonal, and unhurried
This is a day for slowing down, for looking closely, and for making marks on paper in the quiet company of others.
About Joan Hanley
Joan Hanley is an American contemporary artist whose paintings contemplate the intimate moments of daily life, the quiet of light, the weight of a moment, the way feeling accumulates in a landscape.
Joan’s work has been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Fitchburg Art Museum, and galleries across the country. She is currently represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, New York.
She brings to this gathering the same quality that runs through all her work: a generous, unhurried attention to what is right in front of us, relaxation and a surrender to wild beauty.
The Day
We begin at 10:00 a.m. with a welcome circle and a small ritual of choosing colors. From there, guests head outside to a quiet place on the land that invites stillness.
You will sketch, wander, and sketch again, filling four small pieces of paper with the forms, colors, textures and impressions of the world around you.
Bringing these into the barn, or remaining outside in nature (weather dependent), we’ll each create three loose works on paper, using the morning sketches as inspiration.
A seasonal country lunch will be prepared by Carolyn Hough of Cranberry Meadow Farm and enjoyed within the garden.
After lunch, one piece from each guest will be gently displayed, and Joan will guide the group in writing and sharing short poetic responses to what emerged.
The day closes with a draw from the poetry basket, and weather permitting, time together around the firebowl.
Each guest leaves with their paintings, a line of poetry, and a curated analogue art kit to carry the day forward. All paper, markmakers, brushes and paints will be supplied and go home with you for your continued practice.
We end at 3:00 p.m.
